Victory on All Counts

Sovetsky Sport. May 26, 1974. The men's team competition has ended. First place was taken by the Armed Forces 1 team, consisting of: Viktor Klimenko, Georgy Bogdanov, Vyacheslav Boiko, Vyacheslav Fogel, and Ruben Mikaelyan. Dinamo won the silver medal, and the second Armed Forces team finished in third place.

In the individual competition, Viktor Klimenko is leading (112.6), with Nikolai Andrianov behind him (112.4) and with Alexander Maleev in third (111.0).

The first Army team was ahead from the very beginning of the competition until the end. There are strong gymnasts in this team. Dinamo, no matter how they tried to overtake the leaders, could not do it.

The dispute between the leading athletes was interesting. We have already reported that Andrianov was two tenths ahead of Klimenko after the compulsory program. When Klimenkio got 8.8 for his pommel horse exercise, it seemed that everything was over for him. However, the Muscovite has a fighting character. From apparatus to apparatus, he performed his routines better and better (rings 9.45, vault 9.55, parallel bars 9.6). Nikolai also made mistakes on the pommel horse to score 9.2. And his vault was not very successful either - 9.25.

As a result, Klimenko overtook last year's national champion. Now in the final they have to find out: who is stronger today?

Alexander Maleev dropped from third place due to an uneven performance in the optional program. But in the end he finished the competition well and again returned to his original position.

In fourth place was V. Fogel (110.85), in fifth place was V. Boiko (110.5), in sixth was V. Marchenko (110.3), and in seventh was P. Shamugiya (110.2).
