Successful Gymnastics Spartakiade
Two Times Red Star
Rude Pravo, 3 October 1977
The two-day gymnastics competition for the sports organizations of the security forces of the socialist countries took place in the completely empty hall of the Vitkovice Technical College. Klement Gottwald's iron and machine industry finally came out in the surprising success of Red Star CSSR. They won both team titles, and Mareckova won 4 medals. Malusova, Zemanova, Labakova, and Tabak were among the winners in event finals. This fact is all the more joyous because, according to experts, the Ostrava competition was primarily a women's competition - a showcase of talent for the Olympic Games in Moscow.
In the women's competition, there were junior representatives from the most gymnastically developed countries, and there were also competitors from this year's European championship. The GDR gymnast Kunhardt and the great hope of the USSR Arzhannikova confirmed their very good levels, but the winner was 13-year-old Mareckova, coached by Zivciak. Her difficult elements outweigh those of the top senior Czechoslovak gymnasts. Malusova's excellent vaulting ability was confirmed with her victory on that apparatus, while 11-year-old Labakova won floor exercise.
The winner of the men's competition was a member of the fourth-place Hungarian team in Montreal, Donath. The CSSR team won the Red Star thanks to balanced performances by all team members. European vault champion Tabak, who entered the competition "not healthy," didn't succeed in this event, but made up for it with flawless performances in the team competition.
