I'm not sure that I appreciate Debbie's comment "Kosuge won by
default (Sugawara put her hands down after her double layout on
floor)".

Sugawara clearly made a mistake and should be penalised as the rules
dictate. She took a gamble on a difficult skill and obviously
couldn't pull it round.

Anyway, if you start thinking that anyone who wins an AA by default
just because a competitor makes a mistake, then think about Mary Lou in '84 -
Szabo fell off bars in the team competition (from memory) and as such gave
Retton a .25 head start going into the AA. Retton deserved her medal,
because she didn't make the mistakes of others.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but isn't AA meant to determine the best allround
competitor? In many cases this ends up being the most consistent
competitor ie the one who makes the least mistakes.

I know that here in Maryland they just sort of randomly picked us, before
counties or anything( we don't have states cause there are only two counties)
I wouldn't exactly say that there is such a range of gymnasts, because I'm a
level 8 and I was definitely among a minority of those not throwing double
backs or double fulls. But it doesn't really matter what level you are. I
came in almost dead last on all the events, but I wasn't really expecting
anything else competing against girls who seemed to be mostly elites, level
10's and nine's. The focus of the meet is more just that you got to be there
competing nationally and that you had fun while you were there both competing
and in general, not how well you scored or placed. It's really awesome to get
to meet gymnasts from all over who are all exactly your age (seniors in HS),
and I had a great time.

Top U.S. National Team members are set to challenge top gymnasts from
the Ukrainian National Team at the 1995 Budget Rent a Car Invitational
on June 17 at the San Jose Arena in San Jose, Calif. Not only will
there be exciting women's and men's gymnastics competitions, but fans
will also enjoy a fun-filled festival, complete with gymnastics
exhibitions, face painting, music and appearances by Tumbles, USA
Gymnastics' official mascot.

1992 Olympians Dominique Dawes and Kerri Strug are scheduled to
compete for the U.S. women, along with San Jose native Amy Chow who
won three medals at the 1995 Pan American Games. Pan Am Games team
gold medalist Mary Beth Arnold is also on the women's roster. The men
are expected to be led by 1992 Olympian John Roethlisberger. He will
be joined by 1994 World Championships team members Mihai Bagiu and Kip
Simons. Also competing for the men is Stanford University's Josh Stein
who won the 1994 Pacific Alliance Championships. Each team will
consist of seven members, and complete rosters follow:

Ranked second in the world at the 1994 Team World Championships last
Nov., the U.S. women will be hard to beat. Their competitors, the
Ukrainian women, finished fifth at the Team World Championships. The
U.S. men will field a strong team at the Budget Re nt a Car
Invitational in order to battle the Ukrainian men who are ranked third
in the world. The U.S. men placed ninth at the Team World
Championships last year.

One ticket provides admission to both the women's and men's gymnastics
competitions and the fan festival. Tickets are $20 and $14 and are
available by calling the San Jose Arena Box Office at 408/999-5721 or
BASS Ticket Outlet at 800/225-BASS. Women's co mpetition begins at
2:00 p.m. on June 17, the fan festival is from 4:306:30 p.m., and the
men's competition begins at 6:30 p.m.

Looking for a full time assistant coach to coach girls levels 8 to elite
and/or boys partime coach -Class VI to elite. Gym is very well established
in Cincinnati with over 1200 students and over 70 girl team members and 30
boy team members. We consistently have gymnasts compete at US Championships
and become members of US National Team.
