Help...
I probably should've posted this request to this list a long
time ago,
but I guess I thought it was a little wierd and wouldn't get any
legitimate
responses. I've asked a few people
via private Email, but
as they suggested, maybe
it's a better idea to post it to the list.
I am a martial artist, but
I have a terrible time with leg and hip
flexibility. I am trying to work toward the ultimate
flexibility goal
for all (?) martial artists...
the splits. Does anyone have
any
videos that they would be willing to share
that might help me out
in this? Please, anyone with advice, write me
private Email...
Thank you in advance...

>BTW I also heard that
Kim is going to twist her double layout, her 3 whip
pass, and her dismount??? Does anyone know this for sure???<
Call me a skeptic, but I think the chances of
Kim actually competing a
full-twisting double
layout are slim... though I would be happy to be proven
wrong... How many women have competed that
anyway? I can only think of
Tuzhikova, Chusovitina, and Bontas. Maybe
there are an obscure one or two
others; anyone
know?

Re: Gurova et al.
>It is interesting that
many gymnasts who did not do well at meets at
early
ages, seem to have had longer careers. Case in point, Sushonova
(15th,
I think at the 1984 Euro Juniors, and she had a great career, whereas
Irina
Barakanisova (sp)
who was the 1984 champ, faded fast.<
I
don't know whether this is true or not in general, but I think one has to
look at more than a single meet to decide whether it
is. Shushunova
is
decidedly *not* a good example -- maybe she was
15th at Jr. Europeans in '84,
but she was 1st at
USSR Cup in '83 (making her a legitimate candidate for the
title of #1 in the world two full years before she actually
became world
champ) and 3rd at Olomouc in
'84.

Superstars of Gymnastics
I just finished watching this (from tape) and
had to add a few comments
of my own. First of all I thought the show as a whole
worked great.
They tried this before with ice skaters and it didn't work at
all. The
dancers
were a wonderful addition.
My negative comments mostly concern the
broadcast itself. I really
didn't care if the commentators did a good job or not. This was not a
gymnastics
competition it was a show (a performance).
Shows don't have
commentators rambling
through stuff while the "performers" are on. When Kim
Z. did
her beam they just would not shut up.
If I didn't like the idea
of the music with
beam so much, I would have turned down the volume.
The camera
operators did OK when it was a dance number but everytime
they
broke into gymnastics the camera was always
in the wrong place. They
were either too close or too far.
This could be a
fantastic format in the future but they are going to have
to get a little more innovative with the equipment. They need to design
equipment to work together (i.e. special beam on the floor
so that floor
and beam movements could flow
together). The most innovative
piece of
equipment in this show was Bart's guitar
turning into pommel floor bars.
I liked the idea of bringing Acro Gymnastics into the picture also. It
would do
a lot for the show if they brought in more like some routines
involving power tumbling and trampoline (both are part of
sports acro).
Thanks for your attention, now back to the other messages.

If you're looking
for info on stretching from the net, the
stretching
and flexibility FAQ is the place to start.
See the
address below.
If there is
a video available on the topic of stretching, it has
to
rank up there as one of the most boring videos ever made.

IG Caption Challenge answer
I
was looking at the (March?) IG in the library and I noticed the
Caption
Challenge of the guy who had apparently had his body cut in half
(legs on the ground, head, arms and torso hanging from the
high bar).
Answers were supposed to be in the May issue, which I couldn't
find. Can
someone
look? I thought this picture fairly
hilarious.

Strug changes gymns
According
to USA Today Keri Strug is now training with Tom and
Lori
Forster at Colorado Aerials. She hopes to compete in the
national
championships next month in New Orleans
and plans on attending UCLA after
the 1996
Olympics.

<<When Kim Z. did her beam, they

I have long
been agrivated by commentators who will not be quiet,
especially
during exhibitions and during women's
floor in competitions. I love
the
music and want to be able to sit back and
enjoy the routine. NBC
commentators rarely talk during floor (only when there is a
serious error),
but the ABC commentators (Johnson
and Conner) usually talk the entire time.
It drives me nuts, especially when they
end up saying the exact same things
again during
the replays.

If anyone can
coach kerri Strug, it has
got to be Tom and lori
Foster. she
could very
well hit her peak under those two, who I have a TREMENDOUS
amount of respect for.
And...just was watching a duel meet between Georgia and
Alabama
from earlier this year. Food for thought:
If Kim Kelly is still
feeling jipped
after 1992 (no fault of her own), why are we using the
same
selection process for thjis year and the Olympics?
All
it is gonna result
in is hurt feelings.

Was
Kerri's switch to Aeriels very recent? Also, does anyone know if she is
going to compete in anything before national's? As far as I have heard she
hasn't competed since Dortmund. I wish her the best, and can't wait to
see
her at Nationals-she's always been a favorite
of mine. (When was the article
about her in USA Today?). Maybe the positive attitude of the Forsters (from
what I've
read), combined with training with other elites (Thompson, Powell,
Maiers) is what she needs now that she has had time to
regroup on her own.
Also, if anyone runs across a TV listing for the
U.S. Classic, please let me
know!!! Thanks.

How old is she? She's been around with
Miller since 1991. Is she 17 now and
taking a year

Silivas' '88 music
Hi all,
Greetings
from forest fire country (cough, cough)...
I've been looking on and
off for awhile now for the full version
of the
song that Daniela Silivas used at the Seoul
Olympics.
It *may* be called "Mozart Rocks" and my research
shows that this song
is performed by a group
called Latin Rascals. However, I
have
not been able to find this album
anywhere. I believe it is from
1984
and is only available on cassette or record.
I believe cuts of the
song have been available from some FX music
companies,
but I may be mistaken.
If you've got *any* bits of info that might aid
my search please
email me directly.

chance for rebuttals
This week's
"People" (the one with celebrity marriages on the cover) has a
review of the infamous "Little Girls in Pretty
Boxes" and a brief interview
with Joan Ryan.
Even though the book is about skating and gymnastics, the
review only mentions gymnastics and, IMO, is as one-sided
and inaccurate as the
book (for example, it says
Christy Henrich was a favorite for the 1992
Olympics
and also implies very strongly that Julissa Gomez's "vegetative state" was a
direct result of her vault accident, rather than the result
of oxygen
deprivation at the hospital). Anyway,
since "People" is widely read and
contains
a "Mail" section for reader comments, this might be a good chance
for
gymnasts and gymnastics fans to offer some
rebuttals. My guess is that the
reviewer had no
idea how many inaccuracies there were in the book. Now's our
chance to point them out! If enough people wrote in, perhaps
"People" would
print some of our
comments. The e-mail address is 74774.1513@compuserve.com,
and the fax # is 212-522-0794. The magazine says that all
correspondence must
include the writer's name,
address and daytime phone, or I guess they won't
print
it. So to everyone with opinions that differ from Joan Ryan's, here's
your chance!

Kerri Strug's
birthday is November 19, 1977, making her 18, one year younger
than both Dawes and Miller. Kerri was the youngest member of the '92
team in
Barcelona (14).

How do you think Dianne Durham felt? Was that process any fairer?
